Dean Jones passes away, aged 59

September 24 2020
The 59-year-old, who was working on the IPL 2020 broadcast from the Mumbai studios, suffered a cardiac arrest.

Former Australia cricketer and one of the revolutionaries of the modern ODI game Dean Jones has passed away. The 59-year-old, who was working on the IPL 2020 broadcast from a studio in Mumbai, suffered a cardiac arrest. He is survived by wife Jane, and daughters Isabella and Phoebe.

Jones rewrote the book on ODI batsmanship, using his feet to charge bowlers and complimenting his style with his aggressive running between the wickets. He was a central cog in Australia's revolution in the mid-80s, which saw the Allan Border-led side capture its maiden World Cup title at the Eden Gardens in 1987. Jones would go on to feature 164 times in the 50-over format, finishing with 6068 runs at an excellent average of 44.61.

However, Jones wasn't just a limited-overs specialist. He played the first of his 52 Tests for Australia against a formidable West Indies side in the 1984 Port of Spain Test, scoring a gutsy 48 on debut and putting on over a 100 with Border despite being sick on the morning of the Test match. Steve Smith had pulled out with a stomach bug of his own and captain Kim Hughes decided to call on the Victorian.

More of Jones's resilience was on display a couple of years on when he battled extreme dehydration enroute to his magnum opus 210 in the tied Test of Madras. Jones then went on to have a breakthrough Ashes series in 1989, scoring 566 runs and also topped the averages in his last Test assignment against Sri Lanka in 1992, before selectors dropped him in favour of Damien Martyn.

He finished his Test career with 3631 runs at an average of 46.55 including 11 centuries. In all he made, 19188 first class runs at 51.85 with a best of 324* against arch rivals New South Wales in the 1994-1995 season.

Post his playing career, Jones transitioned into a commentator and broadcaster, earning the sobriquet 'The Professor' in Indian television for his penchant for numbers and analysis. His contract was terminated in 2006 for a racist remark on air. A repentant Jones later returned as coach in the Pakistan Super League, guiding Islamabad United to two titles in the first three years of the competition.

"Dean Jones was a hero to a generation of cricketers and will forever be remembered as a legend of this great game," Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings said about the 2019 inductee to the Australian cricket hall of fame.

"Anyone who watched cricket in the 1980s and 1990s will fondly recall his cavalier approach at the crease and the incredible energy and passion he brought to every game he played.

"Jones remained an immensely popular figure in Australian and Victorian cricket throughout his life and was a much-loved columnist and commentator in every corner of the cricketing world. This is a truly sad day. Deano's loss will be felt not just at home in Australia, but across the globe."

In complete shock to hear about Dean Jones sad passing. One of a kind you were Deano and how lonely and helpless you must have felt on your own in that hotel room-a death we commentators fear the most, and likely to meet, helpless and gone in that hotel room...RIP my friend.

Deano was so important. To our generation, he defined the way we loved the game - so exciting dancing down the track, so energetic racing between the wickets. Later in his career, we felt the injustice of his omissions like it was a personal affront. Always the One Day King. RIP.

Former Australia batsman Dean Jones has died at the age of 59.

Jones passed away in Mumbai, where he was working as a commentator on television coverage of the Indian Premier League.

Stylish in the middle-order, Jones played 52 Tests from 1984 to 1992, averaging 46.55 and winning the Ashes on two occasions.

He was also part of the Australia team that won the World Cup in 1987, beating England in a thrilling final.

In his 164 one-day internationals, Jones averaged 44.61.

He is perhaps best remembered for his innings of 210 in the tied match between Australia and India in 1986.

Afterwards, as a result of his exertions at the crease, he was admitted to hospital.

Jones also had spells in county cricket with Derbyshire and Durham, and, after retiring from playing, had further careers as a coach and broadcaster.

Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings said: "Dean Jones was a hero to a generation of cricketers and will forever be remembered as a legend of this great game.

"Anyone who watched cricket in the 1980s and 1990s will fondly recall his cavalier approach at the crease and the incredible energy and passion he brought to every game he played."

Former England captain Michael Vaughan tweeted: "This is so sad ... A hero of mine has gone far too soon ... always offered so much advice to us younger players when he played at Derby."

Aaron Finch, Australia limited-overs captain, wrote: "Still in shock hearing the news of Deano's passing. Thoughts are with Jane and the family at this incredibly tough time. A great man with an amazing passion for the game."
