im no an expert but the state will not recognize this as a legally binding civil relationship

so the whole movement is to get recognition for  gay marriage as a civil union

So if the church doesn't want to perform gay marriages, that would be extremely bigoted, but then again the religion itself is against gays so what are you gonna do? There should be no question that gay marriage should be legal, but if the church doesn't want to perform it you can't complain.

i dont think the church not wanting to perform a ceremony is the issue here.

i mean theoretically you could find an ordained guy who will perform said ceremony in a church. im gonna guess most gays wont want a church wedding anyway since it represents a place that preaches hates towards them.

the issue for the aus guy is that since the state and church are right now aligned in the definition of a marriage - man and woman contract , changing that would mean the state contract no longer aligns with his faiths definition

so he wants to get a "divorce" under the eyes of the state, but still be married under the eyes of the church.

in most christian countries this is the situation, the states definition of marriage is aligned with christian definitions.

that's why i said i sort of get that mans argument.

Yeah I know what you mean, and in this case, he should be able to do that. He will of course be a bigot, but it's decision to be one. As long as he doesn't harm anyone else or get in the way of other people's rights.
