I am glad that none of this shit happens in International Cricket anymore thanks to DRS and that the players have the POWER to ask for a review to challenge the on-field umpiring decisions. It is very rarely that the 3rd umpire too gets it wrong. What a progress in World Cricket! Cricket came a long way since convincing India to fully embrace DRS so that it can be implemented in every international match. I believe that T20s should have at least 3 for each inning, and 5 in ODIs. For TESTS, I believe, we need at least 5 per side for every 80 overs. 12-22-2022, 02:04 AM
It's a football community thing. After every high profile game, there's a faction who would complain about refereeing regardless because there's room for that, unlike in cricket where LBW calls are decided by tech which leaves no room for interpretation. There are other reports that claim it was one of the best displays from a referee and assistants in a WC match. To understand what actually happened, you need to watch it live, observe replays and most importantly, know the rules. Also, it's impossible to know everything that happened on the field unless you are in the video director's room that shows feed from like 30+ cameras.
You don't need to look that far when it comes to Argentina's first penalty because there was clear contact and even the France players hardly protested the call. The defender doesn't need to try and murder the striker in the penalty box to concede a penalty. None of the 3 penalties and the dive (non-penalty) would have been overturned by VAR intervention anyway. This is similar to blaming the on field umpire for not sending a run out call to the 3rd ump when the batter is 18 inches short. Just because the tech is there, that doesn't mean you have to waste time. 12-22-2022, 02:31 AM

Also, it's impossible to know everything that happened on the field unless you are in the video director's room that shows feed from like 30+ cameras. This is exactly it. I think from the games I watched the France v Eng game was the worse officiated one. And not just cuz it was England Both sides had a lot of things go against them in that game. The final on the other hand was very well handled. In football going to VAR is mostly seen as adding on unnecessary time and they only review these things if it is 100% needed. I think Di Maria's pen is a clear one. You made contact with the player and that is pretty much all you need in that situation. How much contact etc is not really that important..the ref has a clear view of what happened. I guess the Lionel Messi 3rd goal with others being on the field is technically a missed one? I guess in cricket terms it's similar to having 3 players behind leg or something..but honestly it's not like that interrupted the play or affected the game in any way..but sure on a technicality that can be seen as an issue. Fouls that are not called which result in Goals are also open to interpretation. For eg the foul on Saka that resulted in goal for France was a very clear foul but not given..pretty weird..but it's what happens and why I said the ref in that game was a bit iffy. The offside call is controversy is laughable..I mean we are talking mere millimetres here.. All in all the final was a well managed game IMHO. 12-22-2022, 02:33 AM
I am sure there are a handful of these kinds of calls in practical any football game..the more you watch the more these things become normal IMHO.

Yeah, it's the only controversial call going by the rules, but the ref couldn't have spotted it from where he was. Had to be one of the line refs or someone in the video director's room.

The way I remember, this is the first time I started to watch the World Cup Football. I remember seeing Socrates playing. Muga’s friend Leandro was on this team too. I remember Zico too.
Socrates used to dribble the ball (or whatever the term u use to take the ball) and then suddenly pass it over to a team mate while looking in the other direction. So the opposing players think he was taking the ball to pass somewhere else and the defense get very confused for that . That create scoring opportunities. An amazing player! https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/01/football/brazil-world-cup-1982-doctor-socrates-spt-intl/index.html |
