The ICC is investigating the Essel Group's mooted plans for an alternative world cricket structure, even as former IPL chief Lalit Modi revealed he stepped away from the project after deciding it was not something he could deliver.

An emergency ICC committee has been set up to investigate moves made by the Indian billionaire Subhash Chandra, owner of the Essel Group and also Zee TV, of which the subsidiary Ten Sports owns home international cricket television rights for numerous Full Member countries including Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

ESPNcricinfo understands that the committee will also look into the recent activity of Modi and his business partner Dean Kino, the former Cricket Australia head of business and legal affairs and also a key figure in the development of the Champions League Twenty20.

Speaking to the Guardian, Modi said he had done some early work on Chandra's plans over several months, before stepping back. However, he warned against underestimating Chandra, who had previously bankrolled the rebel Indian Cricket League that was snuffed out by the emergence of the IPL - ironically under Modi's stewardship - and left around $2 million in unpaid wages for the players and staff who took part.

"I looked at the plan and discussed it. We had conversations for months - but I usually don't touch something I cannot deliver, and this I cannot," Modi said. "It's not something you can just do and launch - it will take years and it won't happen overnight. It is not putting a tournament together, it's about building the sport from the grassroots up.

"You have to understand Subhash Chandra as a man. If you do, you will know he goes after what he wants and he does not stop. Whether he will succeed is the billion-dollar question. Subhash is a powerful body no doubt but it is a foolish plan at the moment. But he does what he wants and I wish him all the luck. It could be very close, who knows? If he presses the button and puts the money on the table things could start very quickly. The ICC should be fearing him."

Another report, in the Sydney Morning Herald, has outlined plans for international players such as Michael Clarke and David Warner to be offered as much as $50 million each over 10 years to add their names and reputations to the breakaway venture. Modi said that players had been made aware of the project and that trust could be won by payments up front, but there were greater issues of logistics and infrastructure.

"I don't think players have signed anything yet but a few know about it," he said. "They will come, but it is too early for that. The plan requires billions up front. Trust would be a serious issue but they could overcome that with advance payments. If somebody had three or four billion to play around with, with it could be done very easily. Anything less? It would be very difficult.

"Logistics are the big issue and infrastructure the bigger issue. In my case we had one competition and had the cash and the infrastructure available, with partners and stadiums in place. On a green field project like this, where are the stadiums? They need to find them, create them or convert existing ones - the gestation period for that is quite long."

The ICC executive board has faced a wave of criticism following the adoption of a "Big Three" model in 2014 driven by Kino, IPL COO Sundar Raman, ICC chairman N Srinivasan, outgoing ECB chairman but incoming president Giles Clarke, and CA chairman Wally Edwards. The model placed most responsibility for, but also reward from, the international game in the hands of India, England and Australia.

Srinivasan, Giles Clarke and Edwards are known to have discussed the possible breakaway at their most recent ICC meetings in Dubai earlier this month.

Now this would be quite a wee change if it happened...

But looks almost impossible to pull off.
Where can we contribute to this cause?
Is this what we really want though ? Won't we then be just beholden to 1 guy?

On a serious note, not backing that thing but I think the ICC need a bit of a shock to their system and fear of such a event happening is good
Srini is powerful but its not like he owns cricket. The big 3 do.

But if someone makes a new cricket structure it will be like WSC where Kerry Packer controlled everything going into dressing rooms etc and blasting players etc.

Not saying it will happen and you are right a shock like this might be good for the ICC. Let's see how this breaks down.
Srini under fire from within the BCCI

This is escalating pretty quickly now. Srini might be out of the ICC by Sept - that's what this is all heading towards I think.
N Srinivasan's gay son accuses him of holding him captive: report

Former BCCI chief N Srinivasan's gay son Ashwin has accused his father of forcing him to get married and have children, reports said Wednesday.

Ashwin reportedly told the DNA newspaper that he and and his partner Avi Mukherjee were being held captive in the First Avenue neighbourhood of the Madras Boat Club near his father's residence in Chennai.

Ashwin said this happened after he spoke out in May 2014 on his brother-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan's alleged links with well-known bookies.

"I want my father to give me my share of family property and let me live my life the way I want with my partner Avi... "We're being held captive against our will and tortured by my father who wants me to break up with Avi, get married and have children to further the family line," the DNA quoted him as saying.

This report, coming two weeks after a senior doctor of Delhi's premier AIIMS hospital committed suicide alleging mental torture by her gay husband, has put the focus again on homosexual men being forced into marriage with partners of the opposite sex.

The DNA also published a series of letters between the two in which Ashwin accuses his father of unleashing violence on him and his partner over the years.

The letters seemed to have been written on Srinivasan's personal stationery in 2007-2008.

One of the letters in August 2008 had Srinivasan reportedly saying, "Although our views on your relationship and friend have honestly not changed - I can't see why you can't either restore family ties by spending weekends at Chennai or look at getting involved in the family business by staying here during the weekdays.

In another letter, Srinivasan accused Avi of trying to "asset manage" Ashwin and extort his family property.

DNA said Srinivasan refused to comment on the report saying it was a "personal matter between father and son."

Srini under the pump now LMAO
Boy oh boy! This Srini guy.... I knew his life was full of crap. These people like Mikhail Gorbachev with a scar on their head have no chance in our world.

Got booed by the MCG crowd
Accused by the BCCI
Accused by his gay son
Accused by the non-big3 nations
and the list goes on....

But srini leaving is nothing. The whole ICC needs to be flushed down the drain and pumped into the Arabian Sea through the sewers never to be seen again.

A new rebel thing is of no use either if they are to govern cricket in a corrupt manner later on.
