Sri Lanka Cricket Discussion Thread - Bada - 11-25-2014
Former Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has revealed he is in favour of the International Cricket Council's clampdown on suspect bowling actions.
The ICC has come down hard on spinners that have been deemed to extend the bend in their arm above the 15 degree limit when bowling.
It has led to several bowlers being suspended from international cricket, most notably Pakistan talisman Saeed Ajmal.
While Muralitharan himself was no stranger to accusations of possessing an illegal action - due to a congenital bent arm, he was cleared on each occasion - the 42-year-old record breaker supports the ICC.
"Definitely. I'm in favour of the system because it's the only way to prove a bowler is chucking or not," said the world's leading wicket-taker in Tests and one-day internationals.
"People don't understand this, even past cricketers don't understand: everybody's arms are not the same. I can feel sympathy for them because they should have been tested before, not now."

Mobitel sports awards on Sirasa TV now if anyone is interested. Mathews might get some award for his performances in the last 12 months.

Kumar Sangakkara set to sign with Surrey potentially ending Kevin Pietersen's hopes
Written by Daily Mail
Having already been dropped by England across all formats, Pietersen has been de-registered by Surrey but had hopes of agreeing to a new deal by the start of next season.
However, The Sun reports Sri Lankan keeper-batsman Sangakkara could sign with the London-based country side within days
With 37-year-old Sangakkara's possible deal commanding a substantial fee, there would unlikely be any room in the budget for what Pietersen would be expecting.
Pietersen’s contract with Surrey expired in August, making him a free agent, and he's since plied his trade as a Twenty20 mercenary in India, the Caribbean and he's due to line up for Melbourne Stars in Australia's Big Bash League in the southern hemisphere summer.
The batsman's also kept himself in the spotlight after the release of his controversial book, KP: The Autobiography, which was published in October.
Pietersen didn't play County Championship division two for Surrey last campaign, preferring only limited overs cricket when he wasn't injured.
Sangakkara, who's had previous stints at Warwickshire and Durham, plans to retire from all formats after the World Cup, but has been asked by Sri Lanka selectors to consider playing on in Tests.
The left-hander is 12 short of 12,000 Test runs after 128 Tests at an average of 58.76 and is also a star of the 50-over format with 13,050 runs at an average of 40.15.
And he signed off last season's stay with Durham with a knock of 159 in a draw with Sussex.
Surrey have been unlucky with big name signings in recent years, with Graeme Smith and Ricky Ponting both suffering injuries during their time at the county.
Sri Lanka Women's Cricket - Bada - 12-27-2014
Sri Lanka Cricket has retained the same officials in charge of the national women's team for their UAE tour, despite the men involved being under investigation for allegations of sexual misconduct from some players. According to Nishantha Ranatunga, the SLC secretary, the officials have not been proven guilty and the board saw no reason why they should not continue in their roles.
A preliminary inquiry carried out by a one-person fact-finding committee had allegedly received evidence from players that three officials were involved in the alleged acts. SLC handed over that report to the sports ministry for a full-scale investigation by a three-member committee appointed by the sports minister.
Ashley de Silva, the SLC chief executive, told the Sri Lanka-based Daily Mirror that the board would wait for the final report of the investigation. "Once the final report comes in, the Ex-Co will decide the next course of action."
Local media reports in October had alleged that some women cricketers were compelled to perform sexual favours for officials, in order to earn or keep their place in the national side, leading to an "initial investigation" from SLC, followed by the preliminary inquiry.

Angelo Mathews is New York Times' International Cricketer of the Year.
Both on the Field and Off, 2014 Was an Eventful Year in the World of Cricket
The shock remains too raw to think of 2014 as anything but the year in which Australian batsman Phillip Hughes was killed while batting in a match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Horror and disbelief at the event that felt inconceivable and the grief of a close-knit, global community of players will reverberate for a while. So, too, will the sense of loss attached to any life cut off so prematurely.
Yet the most significant cricketing events of 2014 probably occurred off the field earlier in the year. The restructuring of the International Cricket Council, the game’s ruling body, in which India, Australia and England constituted themselves a version of the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council — taking a permanent majority on the main committee and the chairmanship of others — has potentially profound longer-term implications for the game.

Dilshan climbs to second spot
Ceylon Today Sports: Sri Lanka opener, T.M. Dilshan has moved two places up to claim the second spot of the ICC ODI All-rounders rankings with 404 points, just behind his captain Angelo Mathews who has maintained the summit in the particular category with 407 points. This has been the first occasion where two Sri Lankans top the ICC ODI All-rounders rankings.
Dilshan has been in prolific form with the bat and ball. The 38-year-old Sri Lankan run machine has scored 530 runs in the last 10 ODIs at a brilliant average of 53.00 while capturing 14 wickets bowling his off spinners.
