That is the main pavilion where you get dressing rooms and everything. You can't remove it like that and sustain Galle as a cricket stadium.
The reconstructed Galle International Cricket Stadium will host the third and final Test Match between Sri Lanka and England. No Tests have been staged at Galle after the 2004 tsunami completely destroyed the stadium.
The venue was declared open on Monday, by President Mahinda Rajapakase and the new look stadium is right up there with all the modern facilities.

November Test match against England could be the last Test played in Sri Lanka’s most iconic Test venue Galle Int Cricket Stadium, if Govt goes ahead with plans to move the stadium due to issues related to Galle Fort’s UNESCO world heritage status & Galle City expansion project

I think it's more of a political issue rather than anything else. They can bring down the main pavillion building and rebuild it on a different side which doesn't obstruct the view of the Fort rather than spending money on a new stadium.
Mister it will still be blocking the view of the Fort isn't it?
The aim is to get rid of the main pavilion aka the erection named Mahinda Rajapakshe
Move the whole stadium to get rid of a stand? sounds like a thing only Randy & his beloved government would do.

I recon pj and rs will immediately take the opposite idea Arjuna is suggesting.
This is where SBS differ from Anti-SBS...If it is not about Sanga, we would even back Arjuna
P.S. - called it in the chat that Arjuna would do a press conference anyway...

You take away that ground and stick it somewhere else then we loose all that. Don't forget all the extra tourism brings in with stadium being right next to the fort.
SL have to tell UNESCO to stick their heritage status where ever they want and do whats best for SL, there is no point doing all these just to have bragging rights about a heritage site.
Well said.
There is a fort in Matara too. No one cares about it. That was built before the Galle Fort if I am correct. Fort + Stadium is certainly a better deal for everyone than just a Fort or just a Stadium.
And the fort is something built by Dutch. Not even Sri Lankans. The stadium is full of great Sri Lankan memories like Murali's 800th wicket, Hera heroics, Mahela 167 & Sanga debut as captain and many more. These things were done by Sri Lankans. Our own people.
This is colonial mindset all over again... Not knowing what is more important to US...
It's not just the Fort. The whole old town area is officially listed as a heritage. I initially thought it was just the Fort. So they must be paying a large amount.
