Colombo schools played a few Jaffna schools as an annual fixture before troubles started. Cricket was quite popular in Jaffna before the troubles, I wouldn't say it was the most popular but it had a good following. Unfortunately a generation of kids couldn't watch the game and was lost to the game due to the unrest.
Don Bradman never went to India, Pakistan or Bangladesh but here he is in Toronto into 1932 playing a match. Does it mean anything? No
Sporting culture always existed so cricket also existed. Like I said it was played in school and that's it. You can't really arrange cricket tournaments due to its expense while Football and Athletics required minimal equipment.
You are someone born during the last 30-35 years, so you are actually unaware of what happened before the troubles started.
Did you read the story of Kandeepan which is on this thread. He had tried to come to Colombo to play cricket more than 15 times but the LTTE hadn't allowed him, even threatening to kill his whole family. I am sure there would have been others who tried and failed. So I don't believe your story about kids not wanting to relocate. That's just a lame excuse to hide facts. Anyway, I believe improving infrastructure, like having more turf wickets and other improvements which will give more facilities and encourage kids to take up the game in the Northern province itself is better than trying to relocate them at a young age.
