What a great test match. Worthwhile losing sleep over it too.

Always Anderson at the end isn't it!

Great for Wagner too, after the mauling he got throughout the series. And he had a marathon spell at the end there. Close to 20 overs on the trot. Can't ever write off great players.

This is the first win for Southee as captain too right?

Root and Stokes were playing really well. Root got stuck in the 90s and there were few quiet overs there.

And of course the Brook run out didn't help.

But great to see, Stokes knuckling down depending on the situation. And I don't think the follow-on was the wrong decision.

Stokes' also had trouble with the knee. The way he attempted to play that short ball probably had a lot to do with it too, although there was no doubt, he was gonna take it on . I think he later said he looked at it as an opportunity to get 20 quick runs (same way they broke the game against NZ in the summer)

Anyway great stuff. Hopefully the Ashes in a few months delivers as well!

England just threw the game away by trying attacking strategies didn't they, they could have batted NZ out of the game and easily win the match if they didn't enforce the follow on.

I don't think the follow on was the wrong call. Stokes was probably thinking about rain too. And the fact that NZ were struggling big time in all of the innings that came before it. Past teams would have batted NZ out of the game though. That's true.

This England team also fancy a chase. When those early wickets fell, previous English teams would have gone for a draw but thankfully these guys didn't and the game is better for it.

Brook run out also didn't help.

Hard to blame any decision when you just lose by 1 run. There were other key scenarios that could have gone their way too that could have made a difference.

It was a great test match overall which is what matters.

Eng should continue to play this way imo.

Sure you can blame when you lose by 1 run, if it wasn't for follow on it could have been a regular boring win for England,

England made a game out of nothing.

Yeah they will definitely continue to play this way as long as its Stokes, Baz and Key in charge.

Its so much better for the game too.

Also messaging remains the same, they keep talking about bringing crowds into the game, producing results, entertaining and all that jazz to spring more life into test cricket. And they've lived up to it throughout. Long may it continue.

One of Stokes' stated aims since taking over the England captaincy has been to max out on entertainment, and risk losing games in order to win them. That policy has paid handsome dividends over the past year, most especially in Pakistan before Christmas when England's attacking instincts broke open the series, most memorably in the first Test at Rawalpindi.

"That's obviously a huge objective of ours," he added. "I don't want people to get mixed up, [because] that doesn't mean that we're not fussed if we don't win or lose. Obviously, we always want to win. It's very disappointing to lose, but you can't help but be excited that we've been a part of a game like that."

Only thing for me is it should have been a tie. The 2nd last delivery to Anderson was clearly a wide for me .

Yeah seeing the replays it seemed a clear wide and Anderson was standing almost upright as well.

But these things even themselves out. Like Gower said - it is a point of contention but then same could be said about Pope's catch and so on.

Also England had it go their way back in 2005 in Edgbaston. Kaspo was not out there though it was given. So there you go.

Good memory PJ, exactly! I too remembered that as soon as I saw that happening in this NZ test match.  What a ball from Eranga that was!  Where is he now?  He too just disappeared out to oblivion, was it because of his chucking issue?

You see PJ, I am giving you full credit here for posting that incident here and draw that similarity, instead of repeating the same (had I was the first to remind it, probably few posts down mine without any reference to my post, you would have said the same), using somewhat different words.

The other day, I wrote a writeup pointing out only Oshada Fernando had hit a long inning (double century - in the recently concluded domestic 4-day tournament), and few others were only playing in T20 leagues, that is out of the top batters of our TEST squad to NZ.  Doing so, I posted an alarming reminder that this series is not going to be good for us.  Until then, you have been writing so much about this upcoming tour (in one instance, you got involved with SLCricInfo1 about Dasun, going for pages), but did not mention my original angle at all in any of your prior posts to that of mine.  

Then, all of a sudden, with no reference to my post at all, you came up with a more detailed writeup covering all of the batsmen who have scored a century or more in that tournament and pointed out the same thought. Yours was more detailed and informative to the members since it included your type of research data, so you see how you stole my thought and that idea, but turned that into your own without giving any reference to the original post and its owner?  You may be doing that to the others as well.

I am glad, you are not writing official books, RP and articles etc. etc., because you probably will get lot of lawsuits coming your way for plagiarism

I am not sure if that is how you are in real life too, or just that is your style in only in this forum.
That said, for anything that you could oppose right way, for something I have said, you will make it very clear and go right ahead and oppose it (i.e. If my opinion sounds unpopular/unacceptable).  It is just that when you see me making a good point about cricket, that you steal it from me and present it nicely, with more data to support it as it originally came from you.

It may be how some people write their posts, but that is not me!  I would always give credit to the original post (and its owner) if I am repeating that opinion by saying "as so and so mentioned, already".
