With the World Cup fast approaching, England are all set to hand Jofra Archer an opportunity to make an impression ahead of the global event. Barbados-born fast bowler Archer - who's now eligible to play for England has plied his trade in various T20 leagues across the globe and is considered as one of the most impactful pacers in modern day cricket. The lanky pacer is an integral part of Rajasthan Royals in the ongoing IPL and all eyes would be on his performance, given the competitiveness of the lucrative tournament.
England skipper Eoin Morgan recently confirmed that Archer's audition for the World Cup would be during the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan. The five-match series will be played in England from May 8th to 19th and if Archer performs well in the bilateral series, he might get a place in the squad for the World Cup.
"The hype about Jofra playing around the world and doing well and attracting a lot of attention is justified as he has put in performances that warrant looking at," said Morgan during a recent ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy tour event. "Trevor Bayliss said after the West Indies series we will look at him against Pakistan and that's what we will do. We don't have to name our (World Cup) squad until the end of the Pakistan series so we'll have a look and see how he goes.
England have been in a rich vein of form in ODIs of late and they have one of the most balanced squads for the showpiece event. Their batting has the firepower, the spin department looks well balanced while the pace attack looks strong as well with Archer's potential inclusion. After their early exit in World Cup 2015, the team was revamped under Morgan's captaincy and since then, they have surged to the number 1 spot in ICC ODI rankings. They've a unit that can brush aside any team on a given day and they are also considered as one of the favourites to lift the World Cup, a tag that doesn't affect the skipper.
"You can't ignore it but we've prepared for going into the World Cup as favourites," he pointed out. "It's something which sits absolutely fine with us. The reason it is there is because of the success we've had in the past but that's all in the past now and our focus needs to be on what's to come and the things we need to do."
"There's a huge opportunity for us to go and continue playing the cricket we have done over the last three and a half years off the back of a challenging tour to the West Indies where we were tested in every department. I think, sitting here right now, we're equipped really well. We still have one game in Dublin against Ireland and our games at home against Pakistan in the build-up to the World Cup so there's plenty of cricket to be played but all the focus is going to be on the competition."
