I've always been a huge fan of the Dune books, and was so ****** disappointed after seeing the 1980s movie so horribly botch it. Was super excited when they announced a remake and even more so for Denis Villeneuve as director. I think his Arrival is one of the greatest Sci-Fi movies of all times, and he's one of the best Sci-Fi directors of this generation so it was a great match. Also, it was announced that he took on the project on the condition that it has to be made into two movies (typically its the studios that insist on breaking stories into multiple movies so they can milk it) because it really is such a rich and complex story, and there's so much 'setting up' to do, you simply can't do that in even a 3 hour movie. Great decision.
And the movie itself was everything I hoped for. First of all, it's often talked about how LOTR is the most faithful screen adaptation of all time, but Dune even goes beyond that. They didn't skip a single important thing, didn't take any liberties and change/spice up characters or change plot lines, and managed to convey pretty much all the important details without over the top exposition. My wifey hadn't read the books, and she only asked for the minimum backstory before watching, but she said she got pretty much everything about it. I think that's pretty much a great tribute to the showrunners.
The casting was great - first I had my reservations about Timothy Charlamet as the lead, but I think he proved me wrong and did a great job. Zendaya is a perfect casting too, and all the rest big names like Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, Oscar Issac, Rebecca Ferguson, and Josh Brolin were pretty great for their roles and did a fantastic job. Really lobed Issac's performance.
The movie itself managed to convey the grandeur of the story, everything was so huge scaled as it should be, CGI was great, and Hans Zimmer music was pretty good as you would expect. Pretty much loved everything about it, perhaps the only criticism is that they didn't explore some of the storylines in detail (as in they'd show a scene, but didn't take a lot of time to explore why it's important etc) but there's only so much time and you have to let the viewer figure things out. So overall there's nothing really that I can point my finger to and say that was bad.
Solid 9/10 for me.
P.S. Anyone who is planning to watch and can see it in theater, I really suggest go do that instead of watching on TV. You'll never fully appreciate it just on TV.
Unfortunately, don't think I'll be able to watch this in the theater with Corona restrictions. Maybe Part 2 hopefully.
Denis got an appetite for massive scale and I love how he directs the camera to move over massive landscapes in that slow ominous manner. Very Ridley like. Excellent at building worlds.
Yeah mad over the cast of this one too. I haven't read the book but always been a fan of Dune since we played that PC strategy game all those years ago. In fact, even before Age of Empires, I think I played that.
Had never played but I can imagine it being fun. They might even release a new game, nowadays they released games after movies often.
