Does it have to be?
Isn't the two new teams in tier two awarded test status when they join? Or are teams below 7th position stripped of test status?

If all teams are having test status, why should the stats be split? Even now Zim is playing mostly against Bangladesh

I mean it's clear if they have it like that. For example, there's a difference between a Bangla bat who averages 40 now (they get to play Tests v good teams) and 40 in division 2 when they play against ZIM, IRL, AFG. Take Tamim Iqbal. He has played 42 Tests (only 5 v ZIM).
Imagine a WI bat who plays in both divisions for years due to promotion and relegation (#7 in div 1 and #1 in div 2). Would be helpful to have his div 1 and div 2 batting stats somewhere on separate lines to judge how good he actually is.

No they will all be Test nations as far as I am aware.

Overall its not a big deal.

But I agree with Bada, as statisticians you'd like to know what your record is in Div 1 and 2 seperately so they should introduce that variable.

A good example will be the 2 Div CC. Generally people don't take Div 2 records that seriously ..but I don't their records are split between divisions..
If they all are considered test nations, it's unfair to split the stats and records into two divisions. No problem have that variable so that we can filter out when calculating stats.

So ICC have to decide what to do here. The best thing would be to get rid of the notion of test status. And decide whether only div 1 or both divs count towards Test stats and records.
I mean if even IC teams can get promoted, and teams constantly get switched around divisions and IC, having this 'Test Status' doesn't make sense.

Think of Test status like being in the "Premier League".
“Sri Lanka Cricket has decided not to support two-tier Test cricket. We strongly believe, in years to come we should encourage, if possible to play four-day Test cricket under lights with the pink ball and maybe extend play further by 45 minutes. Then it would probably be 100 overs per day, 400 per match. ” Sri Lanka Cricket President Thilanga Sumathipala told the media on Wednesday.

“We believe, if we are a full member there can’t be two tiers. Either you play full member Test cricket or you don’t play Test cricket at all. Principally, we are not supportive of having two-tiers. We do not see any benefit of this structure neither to the game nor the players.” Sumathipala further stated.
